Aircraft History and Specification

During 1950's, General Electric started the concept of vertical lift with blower system. In 1961, these developments let GE won a contract from the U.S. Army to build two fan-in-wing XV-5 prototypes. GE retained responsibility for the propulsion system and its integration into the aircraft. Ryan was sub-contracted to the design, construction and flight-testing of the aircraft, since Ryan had considerable experiences of the VTOL earlier with the X-13 and the VZ-3. The XV-5 was equipped with a fan in each wing that provided vertical lift and with a smaller fan in the nose for additional lift and pitch control. These fans were powered from the exhaust gases of two turbojets that also provided the exhaust power for level flight. The flight test was started in 1964 until the first prototype crashed in 1965 and the second prototype also crashed in 1966. In 1967, Army transferred the rebuilt XV-5B to NASA for the carrying out research on the V/STOL until 1974.
